Benedita is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Alcobaça . It has 8,635 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Until the second half of the 12th century, today's area was densely overgrown and uninhabited. A village began to be formed only slowly by the first settlers. In 1532 Benedita became an independent community. After agricultural goods, especially wine and apples, were the most well-known sources of income for the residents, the place experienced significant development from the beginning of the 20th century. The trigger was the emergence of industrial companies, and in particular the shoe industry and knife production brought the place some boom since the 1950s and increasingly 1960s, with at times over 100 industrial companies. The community has been experiencing an industrial downturn since the mid-1990s.
