Eixo is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Aveiro . 5533 inhabitants lived in the municipality (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Eixo was first mentioned in 1050 . In the 12./13. In the 19th century it became the seat of its own district. King D. Manuel I gave the place new city rights in 1516 . In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Eixo district was expanded, only to be dissolved in the mid-19th century and incorporated into Aveiro. In 1989 Eixo was elevated to Vila (small town).

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Eixo and Eirol were merged to form the new municipality of Eixo e Eirol . Eixo is the seat of this newly formed community.
