The Volcán Barú (also Volcán de Chiriqui ) is the highest mountain in Panama with a height of 3477 m .
It is a dormant volcano south of the continental divide in the Chiriquí province . It is surrounded by fertile highlands from which the Chiriquí and Caldera rivers flow. The cities of Volcán and Cerro Punta are to the west of the volcano, Bajo Boquete to the east. The three-thousand-meter peak is part of the Parque Nacional Volcán Barú national park .
The last major eruption took place around the year 700. The first reports of a minor eruption date back to around 1550.
Some historical eruptions have been dated using the radiocarbon method . Known outbreaks: 9280 BC BC ± 30 years, 7420 BC BC ± 75 years, 1270 BC Chr. ± 100 years, 260 ± 150 years, 710 ± 30 years, 1130 ± 150 years and 1340 ± 75 years.
Due to the relatively small north-south extent of Panama and the height of the volcano, on a clear day you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the summit .
To reach the highest point of the volcano, you have to climb the mountain with a guide.
