Peter Lemer

Peter "Pete" Lemer (* 14. June 1942 in London ) is a British jazz - pianist and synthesizer player .

Live and act

Pete Lemer learned to play classical piano as a teenager and studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music , later with Jack Goldzweig. In 1966/1967 he took lessons with Paul Bley and Jaki Byard in New York , as well as double bass lessons with David Walter. He had his first engagement as a professional musician in 1963 with Tony Crombie and Jeff Clyne ; this introduced him to the music of Ornette Coleman and Scott LaFaro . When he returned to London, he led his own formations, a trio, a quartet and a group he called E. In 1965 he formed a trio with John Stevens and Jeff Clyne who performed at the Little Theater Club . In 1966 he founded the Peter Lemer Quintet with Jon Hiseman , the tenor saxophonist George Khan , John Surman as baritone saxophonist and Tony Reeves on bass. The band played in Ronnie Scott's Club and was part of the English free jazz movement of the late 1960s. She only recorded one album - Local Color - which was released on ESP disc in 1966 .

In 1969 Lemer worked with the experimental jazz formation Spontaneous Music Ensemble led by John Stevens . In 1974 he played in the band Gilgamesh and worked mainly as a session musician. In 1975 he was part of Ginger Baker's band , the Baker Gurvitz Army, and took part in their album Elysian Encounter .

Since the mid-1970s, Lemer has also played as a keyboardist with Barbara Thompson's formations Paraphernalia and Jubiaba , as well as in Harry Beckett's band Joy Unlimited . Together with his then-wife Pepi Lemer , he founded the band E . He also worked as a guest musician on recordings of the art rock band Gong by Pierre Moerlen ( Time is the Key ), worked with Annette Peacock and Mike Westbrook ; In 1979 he was a member of Mike Oldfield's band. In 1980 he made recordings with North African musicians, the Troupe Populaire de G'Naoua de Asilah .

In the early 1990s, Lemer played with the formation In Cahoots and toured again in 1999 with Paraphernalia . Lemer also works as a music advisor on piano playing, improvisation and music technology. He currently runs the Cluzion Jazz Club in Bishop's Stortford .
