Yvan Martel (born January 5, 1970 ) is a French mathematician.

Martel studied at the École Polytechnique since 1989 and received his DEA in 1993 with a thesis on nonlinear and numerical analysis. In 1996 he received his doctorate from Haïm Brezis at the University of Paris VI (Thèse de Doctorat) and in 2000 he received his habilitation from the University of Cergy-Pointoise (with Jean Ginibre ).

He deals with various partial differential equations in mathematical physics ( soliton solutions, etc.). He worked a lot with Frank Merle (including blow-up of the generalized Korteweg-de-Vries equation ) and, for example, with Carlos Kenig .

From 1997 to 2004 he was Maître de conférences at the University of Cergy-Pontoise (although he was seconded to the École Polytechnique from 2002 to 2004, where he was also part-time professor Chargé de Cours). From 2004 to 2012 he was a professor at the University of Versailles- Saint Quentin, has been a professor at the École Polytechnique since 2012 and researches at the Center de Mathématiques Laurent Schwartz.

In 2008 he was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam. For 2018 he is invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro . From 2008 to 2012 he was a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France.
