Frank Merle (born November 22, 1962 in Marseille ) is a French mathematician who deals with analysis.

Merle received his doctorate in 1987 under Henri Berestycki at the École normal supérieure (ENS). Afterwards he was a CNRS researcher at the ENS. In 1989/90 he was Assistant Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University . Merle has been a professor at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise since 1991 . From 1998 to 2003 he was a member of the Institut Universitaire de France. In 1996 and 2003/04 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . He was under visiting professor at Stanford University , Rutgers University , University of Chicago , theMathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Berkeley, the University of Leiden , the University of Tokyo .

Merle deals with partial differential equations and mathematical physics , especially with nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the Korteweg-de-Vries equation and the study of solutions to these equations that collapse or diverge (blow up) in finite time. For this he received the Bôcher Memorial Prize in 2005 . He worked a lot with Yvan Martel .

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Berlin in 1998 (Blow-Up phenomena for critical nonlinear Schrödinger and Zakharov Equations). He was selected as plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 in Seoul (Asymptotics for critical nonlinear dispersive equations). In 1997 he received the Poincaré Prize. In 2000 he received the de Freycinet Prize of the French Academy of Sciences ( Académie des sciences ), and in 2018 its Prix Ampère .
