Henri Berestycki (born March 25, 1951 in Paris ) is a French mathematician who deals with financial mathematics and partial differential equations .

Life

Berestycki attended the École normal superieure (ENS) in Paris from 1971 to 1975 and received his doctorate in 1975 from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie under Haïm Brezis (Doctorat de 3e cycle, Contributions à l'étude desproblemèmes elliptiques non linéaires ). As a post-graduate student , he was a Dickson Instructor at the University of Chicago from 1975 to 1977 . He then did research for the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) from 1975 to 1983 as attaché and later Chargé de Recherche, completed his habilitation in Paris in 1981 and was professor at the University of Paris-Nord from 1983 to 1988 and at the university from 1988 to 2001 Pierre and Marie Curie (member of the laboratory for numerical analysis Jacques-Louis Lions), where he also taught at the ENS (professor 1994 to 1999) and the École polytechnique ( Maître de conference 1987 to 1999). He also went into the financial industry as a consultant to the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC), the Crédit Commercial de France (CCF) and HSBC in Paris. From 2001 he was at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, where he is director of the Center for Mathematics and Modeling in the Social Sciences. Since 2010 he has also directed the Financial Mathematics program at the University of Chicago. He is Visiting Professor of Mathematics in Chicago and Co-Director of the Stevanovich Center of Financial Mathematics.

In addition to financial mathematics, he also deals with mathematical modeling in physics and biology (e.g. reaction-diffusion equations) as well as in the social sciences and worked on non-linear partial differential equations (among others with Louis Nirenberg )

In 2004 he received the Sophie Germain Prize and the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize . In 2010 he was accepted into the Legion of Honor . In 2013 Berestycki was elected an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

Frank Merle is one of his doctoral students .
