Oliver Kegel

Oliver Kegel (born June 14, 1961 in Berlin ) is a former German canoeist . In 1992 he became Olympic champion in a four-man kayak .

career

Oliver Kegel competed for RG Berlin and KC Charlottenburg . In 1981 he won his first world championship medal with the four-person kayak of the Federal Republic of Germany. After Kegel in a two-man kayak and Christoph Wolf were eliminated from the 1983 World Cup, he competed for the Olympic qualification with Detlef Schmidt in 1984 and was unable to qualify. Instead, the two started at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in a four-man kayak and finished eighth.

Over the next few years, Oliver Kegel won German championship titles year after year, but was unable to qualify for the 1988 Olympic Games. In 1988 he won the German championship in single kayaks over 10,000 meters. From 1990 to 1992 he won three times in a row in a single kayak over 1000 meters. Together with Frank Guse he won several championship titles in two-man kayaks ; Together with Thomas Reineck and Dirk Joestel or Joachim Eberhardt, the two also won several times in a four-person kayak. From 1991 to 1993, Oliver Kegel was part of the regular crew of the German four-person kayak at World Championships and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . During these three years, Kegel won four gold and two silver medals in addition to the Olympic gold medal at world championships.

For his sporting successes he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993.
