history

The newspaper was founded in 1910 by lawyer Jacob Nicol with the help of Michael A. Foley. It was a Catholic, but at the same time a liberal medium, which from 1913 also resorted to news agencies and gradually introduced national and international reporting. Nicol was able to build a successful company, which over time also included the newspapers L'Événement and La Nouvelliste , as well as the radio stations CHLT (since 1937) and CKTS (since 1946). In 1955, the publishing media company “La Tribune Ltée” passed to Paul Desruisseaux (director) and Alphé Gauthier (vice director, Nicol's brother-in-law and, up until then, manager of the newspaper). In 1956 the television station CHLT-TV was founded. In 1966 La Tribune joined Québec Télémedia , a year later it was acquired by Paul Desmarais, director of the current publisher “Power Corporation of Canada”, together with Jacques Francoeur.
