Giovanni Maria Visconti
Giovanni Maria Visconti (born September 7, 1388 in Abbiategrasso ; † May 16, 1412 in Milan ) from the Visconti family was proclaimed Duke of Milan in 1402 after his father Gian Galeazzo Visconti suffered the plague in Pavia and at the time of a siege of Florence had passed away. Since he was still a minor, the Condottiere Facino Cane de Casale was added to him as regent. Giovanni Maria married Antonia Malatesta, daughter of Carlo Malatesta , lord of Rimini in 1408 . The marriage remained childless. As an adult he showed insane cruelty, e.g. B. he kept dogs that were trained to tear people apart. When in May 1409, while the war was still going on, the starving people called out to him on the street: “Pace! Pace! ”(Peace!), He let his mercenaries beat the people and kill 200 of them. He then imposed the death penalty on the gallows for pronouncing the word "pace"; even the priests were no longer allowed to pray: "Dona nobis pacem".
In 1412 he was killed by Ghibelline partisans at the Church of San Gottardo in Milan .
