The pilgrimage church Maria Martental is located in Rhineland-Palatinate about 1.5 km south of Leienkaul , district of Cochem-Zell (until 2004 part of the municipality of Laubach ), above the valley of the Moselle tributary Endert .

history

middle Ages

Presumably around 1141 Maria Mendartental ( Martyldal ) was founded by the Augustinian canons of Springiersbach . First canons are attested there who received a mountain near the nearby Cochem-Sehl from Archbishop Arnold I in 1141 . The Roman-German King Konrad III. or Pope Eugene III. Springiersbach later confirmed his ownership in the valle martirum . In 1211 the Archbishop of Trier, Johann I, donated an eternal lamp for the high altar. Since 1212 only Augustinian women have been recorded in Martental.

Probably their considerable property prompted Pope Boniface VIII to place them under the special protection of the Kastorstift in Karden . The women's monastery did not acquire any greater importance. In 1515 only two women choirs lived there. In 1523 the monastery was therefore abolished by Pope Clement VII . Thereupon Springiersbach took possession of it without authorization, but had to commit to reading several weekly masses in Martental in 1541. The seal of the pen showed a crucifixion group . The local chapel of 10,000 martyrs, which collapsed in 1817, was the destination of a pilgrimage .

Modern times

The Redemptorist Father Josef Tillmann bought the property in 1905 and built a monastery building with a house chapel in 1908. Here he put the old miraculous image, a Pietà , back on. He had set himself the pastoral care of the local population and managed the property with a few lay brothers. He founded the Society of Divine Love in Martental and published the Sunday paper Christian Family . When he died in 1918, the lay brothers received the monastic character of the complex. In 1927 the Society of the Sacred Heart Priests from Sittard took over the monastery. They built a new pilgrimage church in 1934. From 1941 to 1945 the facility was used as a land service yard for the Hitler Youth . The Sacred Heart priests rebuilt the monastery after the war. In 1960 the new church was consecrated and expanded in 1973/74. The pilgrimage site, which celebrates the festival of the Seven Sorrows of Mary on September 15 as a patronage festival with a festival week, is still very popular.
