Life

Galatius studied physics (preliminary diploma 1998) and mathematics (diploma 2002) at the University of Aarhus , where he received his doctorate under Ib Madsen in 2004 ( Characteristic Classes of Surface Bundles ). In 2004 he became Szegö Assistant Professor at Stanford, received tenure in 2006 and became Associate Professor in 2008. From 2007 to 2010 he was a Clay Research Fellow. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

Together with Ulrike Tillmann , Ib Madsen, and Michael Weiss, he simplified and generalized the proof of the Mumford conjecture about the stable homology of the mapping class groups (originally by Madsen and Weiss).

In 2010 he received the silver medal from the Danish Academy of Sciences. In 2014 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul (Moduli spaces of manifolds).
