Michael Weiss (mathematician)
Michael S. Weiss (born December 14, 1955 in Berlin ) is a German mathematician.
Weiss studied at the University of Warwick , where he received his doctorate in 1982 under Brian Sanderson ( An Attack on the Kervaire Invariant Conjecture ). He was a professor at the University of Aberdeen . In 2011 he was appointed to an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at the University of Münster.
He deals with algebraic topology and differential topology , especially surgery , algebraic K-theory and algebraic L-theory . Around 2003 he proved the Mumford conjecture with Ib Madsen , based on ideas from Ulrike Tillmann . He later simplified the proof with Madsen, Tillmann, and Søren Galatius .
In 2006 he received the Fröhlich Prize .
