Limfjordsbroen ( Danish for "the Limfjord Bridge") is a bascule bridge in Denmark , which leads through the center of Aalborg over the Limfjord to Nørresundby . The approximately 640 meter long bridge connects the Himmerland peninsula with the North Jutian island of Vendsyssel-Thy . Secondærrute 180 , which runs from Aarhus to Sæby , runs on the four-lane road bridge . In the middle, the bascule bridge can be opened for shipping.
history
Before Limfjordsbro was established, Aalborg and Nørresundby, which was still independent at the time, were connected to the railway bridge from 1879 by a pontoon bridge that was built in 1865. Demands for a permanent connection led to the first public tender in 1920 ; however, construction did not begin until ten years later. The project meant a major intervention in urban planning , as main roads had to be relocated in both cities. The strong current in the Limfjord required positioning at an angle of 90 ° to the water current so that ships can pass safely through. After the inauguration of the Limfjordsbro on March 30, 1933, two years later the celebrations took place again when the bridge tolls were abolished on May 15, 1935 .
In order to cope with the increasing volume of traffic, the bridge was widened in 1960 from 14.50 meters to today's 21.40 meters. Despite this measure, it was considered the busiest road in Denmark until the Limfjord Tunnel was opened in 1969.
