Rebild Bakker is a nature reserve in Rebild municipality , Nordjylland region , Denmark .

history

The park was founded by Max Henius. The Dane emigrated to Chicago in 1881 . In 1911 he bought an area of ​​around 77 hectares . In 1912 he handed it over to the Danish state with the wish to keep an honorable memory of the Danish emigrants in the USA. Although it is called Rebild Bakker National Park , it is not a national park in terms of Danish nature conservation.

The American National Day on July 4th is celebrated every year with a Danish-American Friendship Festival. The first Rebild Festival took place in 1912 in the presence of the Danish King Christian X instead. It is organized by the "Rebild National Park Society Inc."

Provisions

The park was opened to the public under three conditions:

1. The area must remain in a natural state.
2. The area must be freely accessible.
3. Americans of Danish origin and Danes with American roots are allowed to celebrate public holidays on the premises.

particularities

A bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln stands in the park. The film "Rebildfest" from 1990 with Richard Chamberlain is about the festival.
