Thorsten Andersson

Thorsten Andersson (born February 23, 1929 - † April 22, 2018 ) was a Swedish Germanic and Scandinavian Medievalist , linguist and name researcher . He was professor for Scandinavian languages ​​and place name research at Uppsala University .

Life

After studying and editing the Swedish language at the University of Münster , Andersson completed his doctorate in Uppsala, where he was appointed full professor for Scandinavian studies in 1971 until his retirement in 1994.

Andersson was from 1987 a member of the philological class of the Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies ("Royal Swedish Academy for Literature, History and Antiquities") and currently member of the board. In addition, Andersson was co-editor of the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde and was the author of numerous articles in the field of linguistics and onomatology. He worked as editor and contributor for the series of supplementary volumes.

From 1971 to 1985 he was a member of the "NORN Committee" ( Nordic Committee for Cooperation in Onomastics ) and from 1971 to 1980 he was its chairman. From 1983 to 2000 he was co-editor of the Swedish journal for Scandinavian personal nomenclature Studia Anthroponymica Scandinavica. Tidskrift för nordisk personnamnsforskning . and from 1985 to 2005 editor of the Swedish journal for Scandinavian place naming, Namn och bygd. Tides for nordisk ortnamnsforskning .

In 2003 the University of Copenhagen awarded him an honorary doctorate.
