Astrid van Nahl

Astrid van Nahl (* 1951 in Schweinfurt ) is a German Scandinavian mediaevalist , journalist and translator . She currently works as a lecturer at the University of Bonn , as a research assistant on religious studies projects and publications at the University of Uppsala , "chief editor" at Mouton de Gruyter, and editor-in-chief and co-founder of the online magazine Alliteratus .

Live and act

After studying at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , she received her doctorate in 1980 from Heinrich Beck on ancient Icelandic saga literature and then worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Bonn, Saarbrücken, Bochum, Heidelberg and Uppsala. For example, from 1980 to 1982 in the special research area of ​​the German Research Foundation (DFG) "Electronic Language Research" at the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken, from 1983 to 1984 involved in the Germanic Antiquities project by the Minister for Education and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia at the University of Bonn , from 1984 to 1986 as a senior research assistant at the University of Bonn in continuation of the DFG project Saarbrücken, then again from 1989 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1998 as a research assistant at the Ruhr University Bochum and at the same time as a freelancer at the Reallexikon from 1994 onwards Germanic antiquity at the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . As at Heidelberg University from 2002 to 2004 , she has been involved in religious studies projects and publications at Uppsala University since 2004.

As an author and (co-) editor , especially on the Icelandic and Old Icelandic language, Germanic antiquity and the normal literature, she has published a number of books. In addition to independent publications, she wore a. a. Article on the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde and was involved in the planning of the database Germanische Altertumskunde Online of the publishing house de Gruyter. Since 2004 she has also been editor-in-chief of the journal “Dialectologia et Geolinguistica” at his imprint Mouton de Gruyter . As a translator from English, French and the Nordic languages, in 2007 a. a. the standard work "Old Norse Philology" by Odd Einar Haugen in German.

Since 2008 she has been working on a voluntary basis as co-founder and editor-in-chief of the online magazine Alliteratus and, together with twenty other editors, publishes reviews and larger articles on current children's, youth and adult literature, audio books, as well as non-fiction and specialist publications.

In March 2013, Astrid van Nahl, as editor-in-chief of Alliteratus, initiated a new debate about this award with an open letter to the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , which sponsors the German Youth Literature Prize and supports the Working Group for Youth Literature with 480,000 euros annually . In the letter it says u. a .: “We live in a country that has been producing an abundance of children's and youth literature for a number of years, which doesn't have to hide in any way and for which we are often enough envied abroad. But sometimes, there are obviously situations (exception: sport) where we Germans have still not learned to be proud of our own achievements and to convey them [...] to the outside world very objectively - and that is by no means nationalistic to do. ”One month later, in 2013, the initiative of German-language children's and youth book authors and illustrators took up van Nahl's criticism and suggestions and founded an initiative that was signed by more than 500 authors and illustrators, including winners of the German Youth Literature Prize such as Milena Baisch , Finn-Ole Heinrich , Klaus Kordon , Paul Maar , Salah Naoura , Ursula Poznanski and Anja Tuckermann .
