Alliteratus is a German online magazine on literature and media.

history

Since it was founded in March 2008, reviews and larger articles on current children's, youth and adult literature, audio books as well as non-fiction and specialist publications have been published several times a week . At the end of 2018, according to the website operator, over 11,000 articles were available for free and registration-free download as PDF files.

Content and goals

The aim of the magazine is to offer expert help in the selection of current literature for the private sector, for kindergartens, schools and universities as well as for reading promotion in general. This also includes the critical documentation of developments in the German book and education sector.

Alliteratus offers one- to two-page individual reports, multi-page articles on book series, authors and publishers as well as extensive thematic booklets on seasonal, socio-political or historical occasions. In addition to a search function, it is possible to navigate through various sections, sub-categories, topics and publication years. The so-called "Recommended paperback books" (ETs) form their own categories, which give an overview of current paperback books sorted by age group , as well as the "book chest" with brief reviews of older books that are worth reading.

The assessment criterion is the subjective impression of the respective reviewer, who sets his priorities in selected categories; if the views are controversial, several reviews of a book may be published. The rating is indicated - in addition to the reason - by the number of stars. Since there are no economic ties to authors, publishers or other institutions, Alliteratus claims the title of independent evaluation. We deliberately refrain from advertising from third parties. The editorial team bears the running costs itself.

After Wolfgang Bittner had already criticized the practice of awarding the German Youth Literature Prize in a magazine of the Association of German Writers in 1998 - albeit without much response - , editor-in-chief Astrid van Nahl joined the Federal Ministry 15 years later, in March 2013, with an open letter to the Federal Ministry for Family, seniors, women and youth started a new debate. A month later, the initiative of German-speaking authors of books for children and young people and illustrators took up these criticisms and suggestions and formulated a letter of protest that was signed by more than 500 authors and illustrators. Since then, Alliteratus has regularly documented the progress of the discussion and offers a platform for the exchange of information between those affected. At the Frankfurt Book Fair 2013, there was widespread echo when Wolfgang Bittner reported via Alliteratus that representatives of the working group for youth literature would discriminate against the signatories of the initiative by refusing press tickets for the award ceremony.

editorial staff

The editorial team, which consists of around 20 people, is mainly made up of university employees and teachers as well as representatives of other professional groups who are experienced in literature, all of whom carry out their tasks for the magazine on a voluntary basis . There are also a number of other regular contributors from Germany and other European countries; In individual cases, high school pupils are also ideally supported. Most employees can also look back on many years of experience with other online magazines.

The editors-in-chief are Astrid van Nahl, Bernhard Hubner and Jan Alexander van Nahl (as of 2018).
