Working group of youth book publishers

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft von Jugendbuchverlagen eV (avj) is the professional association for publishers who publish books for children and young people , but also audiovisual media, calendars and BuchPlus products for children and young people. It was founded in 1950.

It currently has 95 publishers from Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The focus of its activities is the representation of interests and the networking of the publishers belonging to it, as well as the promotion of children's and youth literature and reading.

Board

The board consists of four volunteers from the publishing industry who are supported by an advisory board. A management is employed to run the office. The seat of the avj office is in Frankfurt am Main .

Actions

The children's bookstore prize was awarded once a year from 2004 to 2014 to the most creative bookstores in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . A jury selected the best actions from all applications. Three main winners, along with state winners, as well as one winner each for Switzerland and Austria were selected. The award ceremony took place at the Leipzig Book Fair . In 2015 the children's bookstore price was suspended until further notice.

On World Book Day, the avj is raffling readings at bookshops in cooperation with the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels eV and the Assortment Committee. The avj publishers make their authors available for readings and local bookshops can apply for these readings.

The avj has been awarding the avj media award since 2012. Outstanding journalistic commitment in the field of children's and young people's books / audio books is honored. Prize winners can be a journalist, a magazine, a newspaper, a TV program, a radio program, an Internet portal or another medium. The prize is awarded annually at the Leipzig Book Fair. Prize winners were:

  • 2012 Anke Sperl and the program queried for their commitment in the field of children's and young people's books / audio books
  • 2013 Christine Knödler and Stefanie Leo, creators of the children's book website www.buecherkinder.de
  • 2014 Verena Hoenig for her commitment in the field of children's and youth books
  • 2015 Susanna Wengeler, editor for the industry magazine BuchMarkt
  • 2016 Franz Lettner and team of 1000 and 1 book
  • 2017 Sylvia Mucke and Christine Paxmann for the Eselsohr magazine team
  • 2018 Roswitha Budeus-Budde, journalist
  • 2019 Maren Bonacker, journalist and head of the children's and youth literature department at the Fantastic Library in Wetzlar
  • 2020 Janett Cernohuby (online editors Janett's opinion and book carousel ) and Ute Wegmann ( Die beste 7 / Deutschlandfunk )

Book box

The customer magazine “ Bücherbox ” presents over 200 recommended new publications for children and young people every year. It appears once a year and is available in libraries and bookshops.

A - Z

Since 2016 the A - Z is no longer available as a print version, but only online. Members introduce themselves here with their addresses and contact persons, publisher profiles and program focuses. In addition, publisher previews, events and job offers can be uploaded. The site also contains addresses and information about children's and youth media. This includes the addresses of research and collection points as well as the specialist journals. There is also an overview of recommendation lists for children's and young people's literature , a selection of more recent publications and information on various prizes and awards for children's and young people's books in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The page is updated every six months and is intended to provide an insight into what is happening in the publishing of children's and young adult literature.
