Bandar Lampung ( Indonesian bandar , "port city", "transshipment port", from Arabic / Persian bāndar ), formerly Tanjungkarang and Telukbetung (Dutch: Oosthaven ) with the directly associated port Panjang , is a town in the southernmost part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra with 940,150 inhabitants (2010 survey) and an area of 169.21 km². It is located at the northern end of the bay, which forms part of the Sunda Strait that runs between Sumatra and Java . Bandar Lampung is the capital of Lampung Province .
history
Bandar Lampung emerged from the merger of the cities of Tanjungkarang and Telukbetung in the early 1980s. The Panjang overseas port is also part of Telukbetung. This developed from Oosthaven , which was laid out by the colonial administration of the Dutch East Indies , and the end point of railway lines inland.
During the massive explosion of the Krakatau volcano in 1883, this southernmost part of Sumatra was washed over by a tremendous tidal wave that claimed 70,000 lives on the Javanese and Sumatran side and paralyzed daily life for a long time due to the heavy ash rain. Normalization did not return until the beginning of the 20th century.
Economy and Transport
Bandar Lampung is mainly characterized by the port, the authorities of the provincial administration, the processing of agricultural products from the surrounding province (such as palm oil , coffee, pepper, tapioca) and the local and international trade of the same.
The city is one of the centers of emigration from the overpopulated islands of Java and Bali . The Bakauheni ferry port is 50 km to the southeast, and the Radin Inten II International Airport is immediately to the northeast . The Trans-Sumatra Highway connects the city across Sumatra with Padang , Medan and Banda Aceh in the north.
