Bima is a city on the east coast of Sumbawa Island in Indonesia 's Nusa Tenggara Barat Province . In 2005 the city ( Kota ) had an estimated population of 123,064 inhabitants, the surrounding administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Bima 407,636 inhabitants.

history

Bima was the capital of the Sultanate of Bima , which had fallen away from the ancient Hindu kingdom on the east coast of the island of Sumbawa after Islamization in the early 17th century.

In 1792 the Sultan Abdu'l Hamid Muhammad Shah signed a treaty with the Dutch East India Company that made Bima a protectorate of the Dutch.

transport

About ten kilometers southwest of the city is Bima Airport ( IATA airport code BMU), from which the former Indonesian airline Merpati Nusantara Airlines flew to Denpasar on Bali and to Surabaya on Java.
