Gowa is a district ( Kabupaten ) in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi . It has an area of 1883 km² and a population of about 500,000 people. The capital is Sungguminasa , and the high-altitude resort of Malino is in the region.

Gowa was also the name of a kingdom in southwest Sulawesi that was founded around 1300 with the center in Tamalate . In its golden era, after the kingdom of Gowa was united with the kingdom of Tallo to the north, the center was around the mouth of the Jeneberang River . The territory of this twin kingdom was the origin of today's city of Makassar , the provincial capital of South Sulawesi .

From 1660 the Netherlands were at war with Gowa, which was the most important power on the west coast around Makassar. In 1667, Admiral Cornelis Speelman forced the ruler Sultan Hasanuddin to sign the Treaty of Bongaja , which gave control of the trade to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The Dutch were helped in their conquest by the Bugis under the warlord Arung Palakka , ruler of the Empire of Bone .
