Sultan Hasanuddin (born January 12, 1631 in Gowa or Makassar , South Sulawesi ; † June 12, 1670 ibid) was a king of Gowa and is an Indonesian national hero. His real name is I Mallombasi Muhammad Bakir . As an adult he was nicknamed Daeng Mattawang and became King XVI in an area called Bonto Mangepe. appointed ( Karaeng Bonto Mangepe ). Like his father, Sultan Malikul Said, he was given an Islamic title when he was appointed king: Sultan Hasanuddin . Because of his bravery, he was called De Haantjes van Het Oosten (Roosters of the Eastern Continent) by the Dutch. He died a year after his abdication as King of Gowa, to which he was forced by the Dutch, in his office ( Tumenanga Ri Balla Pangkana ). Sultan Hasanuddin was buried in the royal tomb in Katangka, in today's Sungguminasa . On November 16, 1973, he was declared a national hero. His tomb, which is located around 12 km south of the center of Makassar, is still visited a lot today. Makassar International Airport and numerous buildings and streets are named after him. Many monuments in the south of Sulawesi also remember him, e. B. on the coastal promenade Pantai Losari in Makassar.
