Tallo (Empire)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tallo ( Portuguese Tolo ) was a kingdom in the northern part of today's Makassar . Before 1460 the area later called Tallo was the northern part of the territory of the Kingdom of Gowa . During the tenure of King Gowa VI. Tunatangka Lopi (1445–1460) was divided into two independent kingdoms, Gowa and Tallo , because the king's two sons had claimed power for themselves. The first son, Tuniawanga Ri Paralekkanna , succeeded his father as King Gowa VII, while his brother, Loe Karaeng Ri Sero , became the first king of Tallo. For about a century the two kingdoms were independent and fought against each other. Not until the tenure of King Gowa IX. Tumpa'risi Kallona , the two kingdoms were reunited as the twin kingdom of Gowa-Tallo . King Tallo still ruled his own country as the armed forces leader ( Indonesian Mangkubumi ) of the new empire, and the constitutional system was set up in such a way that King Tallo's power was almost retained. Since then, the twin kingdom of Gowa-Tallo has come to be known as the Kingdom of Makassar, with Tallo playing an important role as a port city for the empire.

On September 22nd, 1605, King Tallo VI, I Mallingkang Daeng Manyonri Karaeng Katangka , became the first Macassar in the city to convert to Islam and was given the additional title of "Sultan Abdullah Awalul Islam". This step was followed by the King of Gowa XIV, I Mangngarangi Daeng Manrabia, and he received the additional title of "Sultan Alauddin". On Friday, November 9th, 1607, Sultan Abdullah held the first Friday prayer in the central mosque of Tallo and on the same day Sultan Alauddin declared Islam to be the official religion of the Makassar Empire.
