The Jeneberang ( Indonesian : Sungai Jeneberang ) is a 75 kilometer long river in the southwestern half of the island of Sulawesi . The catchment area has an area of 760 square kilometers.
The river has its source near the 2833 meter high mountain Bawakaraeng and runs through the districts of Gowa and Takalar to the port city of Makassar , where it flows into the Strait of Makassar . The river had regularly flooded the urban area.
About 40 kilometers downstream is the 73 meter high Bilibili dam , which was completed in 1999 and has a storage space of 380 million cubic meters.
Around noon on March 26, 2004, a landslide occurred on the upper reaches of the Jeneberang when a rock layer at the Bawakaraeng crater came loose. Around 32 people lost their lives in the process.
