The Bilibili Dam on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi is located about 30 km east of Makassar and 40 kilometers downstream on the Jeneberang . The 73 meter high dam with a storage space of 380 million cubic meters is the largest in South Sulawesi , was completed in 1999 and inaugurated by the then Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri . The dam and reservoir cover an area of 40,428 hectares and were built with the help of foreign loans totaling 780 billion rupiah together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency ( JICA ). The reservoir is the main water supply for the Makassar and Gowa area . The annual sediment deposits from the Bawakaraeng caldera pose a problem for the reservoir, which gradually fills up, which also leads to a clouding of the water quality.
