Traditional shipbuilding in Bira

Bira or Pantai Bira is a village and one of the most famous beaches in South Sulawesi . The distance to Makassar is 195 km. Bira is located in the Konjo area and is the traditional place of construction of the Pinisi ships, which are still made of wood here today. The construction of such a ship can take up to a year and cost up to 2 billion Indonesian rupees. In addition, weaving, which in many families in the form of home work represents an additional source of income and whose products are in great demand on Lombok and other islands in Indonesia, plays an important role. The place, located off the main tourist route, is now also popular as a diving area .

In front of Bira is the small island Pulau Liukang, on which around 100 people live in two villages, and which also offers good opportunities for diving and snorkeling.

Ferries to Flores ( Labuan Bajo ) and Selajar run from the port at Pantai Timur .
