Labuan Bajo (also: Labuhan Bajo) is a port city in Indonesia . It is located at the western end of the island of Flores . The city is the administrative seat of the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) West Manggarai (Manggarai Barat) in the province of East Nusa Tenggara .
The name of the city means something like "port of the Bajo" in the Indonesian language . The Badjo are an ethnic group originally from Sulawesi .
religion
Since the population consists to a large extent of Badjo, in contrast to the otherwise largely Christian Flores live in Labuan Bajo relatively many Muslims. Several churches and Christian schools are scattered across the city. The mosque is located near the port.
Economy and Infrastructure
About 18 kilometers east of the city is a gold mine operated by a Chinese company.
In addition to a ferry port, Labuan Bajo also has a small airport ( Komodo Airport ) with regular regional flight connections, especially to Denpasar ( Bali ). As the destination port of the ferry from Sumbawa to Flores, as well as other less frequent ferry connections, Labuan Bajo is also of particular importance for the movement of goods and people on the island of Flores in general and therefore also for the generally relatively weak tourism in this region.
The approximately 700 km long and relatively well developed Trans-Flores Road, on which intercity buses run daily, connects Labuan Bajo with the most important cities on the island.
The office of the adjacent Komodo National Park, famous for the Komodo dragons, is located in Labuan Bajo . Due to its proximity to the national park, Labuan Bajo is the main starting point for individual tourists who often go to Komodo Island with fishing trawlers . Tours in larger groups, on the other hand, are mainly organized from Bali and Lombok . Because of the diverse flora and fauna of the national park, including in the sea, there is also notable diving tourism.
Labuan Bajo has a post office, numerous shops, and a variety of accommodation options.
