At 600 km, the Batang Hari is the longest river on the Indonesian island of Sumatra .

The Batang Hari rises in the Minangkabau highlands in the Barisan Mountains , in the province of Sumatra Barat ( Western Sumatra ), first flows south through the city of Solok, crosses a small lake and splits into two river arms. It swings north in an arc, flowing through the cities of Sungaida, Muaratebo and Muaratembesi.

It meanders strongly, the capital crosses Jambi Province Jambi , the north east coast of Sumatra aspires to and joins two islands in the sea.

To the south lies the Berbak National Park .
