Bukittinggi
Bukittinggi (also: Bukit Tinggi, Indonesian for "high hill") is a city on the Indonesian island of Sumatra .
Bukittinggi is located in western Sumatra at an altitude of 920 meters, 108 km north of Padang and over 300 km south of Sibolga . With its 107,450 inhabitants (2010 calculation) it is the largest city in the Minangkabau highlands.
Until independence, the city was called Fort de Kock , after the fortress that the Dutch general Hendrik Merkus de Kock had built here during the Padri Wars (1821-1837). The old town extends north of a steep gorge, the Sianok Canyon .
Due to the height above the sea, the city has a pleasant climate. It has different sights:
- Fort de Kock , Dutch fortification
- Jam Gadang , 26 meters high clock tower built in 1926 , the city's landmark
- Pasar Atas, Pasar Bawah , busy markets
- Lobang Jepang , Japanese ammunition bunker in caves
- Taman Bundo Kanduang , in a replica Minangkabau house is the oldest museum in West Sumatra with regional collections. A small zoo is part of the complex.
- Not far away are the Marapi and Singgalang volcanoes .
- About 30 kilometers to the west is the spectacular Maninjau Lake .
Bukittinggi was formerly opened up by the Padang – Bukittinggi railway (with a section as a rack railway) and the Bukittinggi – Payakumbuh railway.
The city is the birthplace of Mohammad Hatta , who wrote the Indonesian Declaration of Independence together with Sukarno and was Indonesia's first vice president.
