John Carroll (actor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Carroll (born July 17, 1906 in New Orleans , Louisiana , USA , † April 24, 1979 in Hollywood , California , actually Julian LaFaye ) was an American actor and singer.

Life

Carroll left his parents' home at the age of twelve and then kept afloat with various odd jobs. He later went to Europe to study singing. Back in the USA, he first worked as a stuntman and extra. He was first seen on the screen in Marianne in 1929 , where he played a soldier.

In 1935 he received in Hi, Gaucho! under the stage name "John Carroll" his first film lead role. The curly haired, about 1.92 meter tall mime reached the peak of his career in the 1940s, where he was mostly used by MGM in second-rate films and musicals. He rarely had the opportunity to work with such well-known directors as Howard Hawks ( SOS fire on board ) or George Cukor ( Susan and the good Lord ). Later he was u. a. featured in numerous Westerns produced by Republic Pictures . In Germany he was best known again for the twelve-part serial Zorro rides, which was originally produced for the cinema and which was broadcast in six parts on ZDF in 1978 as part of the " Western of yesterday " series designed by Joe Hembus . Like many other American actors, Carroll interrupted his career during World War II and enlisted in the army. He served as a pilot in the Air Force in North Africa .

His wisely invested fees - he invested primarily in real estate and in the shrimp industry - ensured him a good livelihood even after he ended his film career in the 1950s.

In the 1950s and 1960s, John Carroll was involved in multiple legal battles: in 1959, he agreed to pay an 81-year-old widow $ 176,000 who claimed he was wooing her for the sake of her property. In 1965 he gave up a post with the Louisiana Tourist Development Commission when there were allegations of irregularities.

After taking on guest roles in television series in 1967, he appeared in 1974 in the feature film , which he produced, Megamann, a mercenary shoots through one last time in front of the film camera.

John Carroll was married twice. His only daughter, Julianna Benito, emerged from his only one year marriage (1935–36) with the Hungarian-born actress Steffi Duna .

Carroll died of leukemia in 1979 . His grave is in Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) .
