Yesterday's western

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yesterday's Western is a compilation of independent Western short films that ran from May 1978 to July 1986 on ZDF's early evening program .

Production history and content

The scene with Justus D. Barnes from The Great Train Robbery, which can be seen in the opening and closing credits of yesterday's westerns

The series was adapted for German television by Joe Hembus and Eydo von Hadeln as an homage to the pioneers of western films. Fred Strittmatter and Quirin Amper Jr. wrote the theme music and Gert Mechoff was responsible for editing. The musical preparation was done by Jiří Kanzelsberger .

There were 155 programs in total. The original 60-minute films were shortened to 25 minutes or broadcast as only slightly shortened two-part films. Above all, B-film rarities and western series from the 1930s and 1940s or serials were shown. Highlights included:

Other popular successes were the first films with John Wayne as well as films with Roy Rogers (and his horse Trigger ), Gene Autry , Richard Dix and Clark Gable (including enmity ). Here, too, unknown actors such as Tom Keene , Lash La Rue or Buster Crabbe were presented to the German television audience for the first time.

Both the opening credits and the closing credits show a short scene with western pioneer Justus D. Barnes (with his Colt raised ) from the 1903 film The Great Train Robbery (director: Edwin S. Porter ).

Zorro

In Zorro rides again ( Zorro the avenger , Zorro rides again , 1937), Zorro's great-grandson slips into the mask of the legendary hero in order to put an end to the villain El Lobo and the ruthless businessman JA Marsden. On the "good" side are the railroad company's shareholders, Joyce and her brother Philip Andrews, and James Vega. It's about the California – Yucatan rail link.

The prequel Zorros Legion Rides Again ( Zorro's Fighting Legion , 1939) takes place in Mexico in 1824. The villain, who pretends to be the resurrected Mayan god Don-del-Oro ("Lord of Gold"), promises the Mayans a reconquest of their land. President Benito Juárez has several appearances (historically not entirely correct) . The story takes place in the fictional Mexican state of San Mendolito .
