US Marshal John (original title: The Star Packer ) is a western from the Lone Star series by Lone Star Productions . It was published by Monogram Pictures Corporation on July 30, 1934. It was directed by Robert N. Bradbury , who also wrote the script.

action

A city is being terrorized by a gang of criminals, its leader is like a shadow and is therefore only referred to everywhere as a shadow . To put an end to his misdeeds, the city is swearing in its new Sheriff Davis. Meanwhile, some gangsters from Shadow's gang try to rob a carriage with money. They manage to do this, but the carriage has already been ambushed by John Travers to protect the money.

He meets Anita Matlock, she is Matt Matlock's niece. When she is greeted by her uncle, the new sheriff is being shot and John takes over his position. Together with his Indian friend Yak, he investigates Shadow . Meanwhile, Matt Matlock tries to persuade his niece to sell her stake in the Matlock farm. A little later she experiences a restless night in which she shoots a gangster with a pistol.

John and his friend slowly discover the secret of the "Shadows", and it comes to the final, decisive battle between the gang of the "Shadows" and the inhabitants of the city.

Background information

Matt Matlock's farm has been featured in several films in the Lone Star series . Examples are the films The Desert Trail from 1935 and the film Showdown am Adlerpaß from 1934.

The film itself contains numerous film errors and logic holes, for example John does not save his Anita from the same position in which the car fell into the water, but from a different point. Another mistake is that the money bag from the coach robbery is never carried by him, but he still uses it again and again.

The stunts were staged and realized by the actors Yakima Canutt and Eddie Parker . They each play a more important role in the feature film.

Some scenes from the film were reused for the documentary 100 Years of John Wayne .

The film was released in Germany under five different titles. These were Der Schatten (as part of the ZDF Western series Westerns from yesterday ), The Relentless , Man of the Law , He Wore a Star and US Marshal John . The film was released on DVD in Germany under the latter title. A DVD version with a new German dubbed version was released in 2009 under the title Der Unbittliche .
