action

Rod Drew is commissioned by his father's best friend to look for his brother and niece, who have been out of sight for 20 years. During the train ride to Canada , Rod meets his old friend Wabi. He is cheated during a poker game and shoots at the cheater. Together they escape from the moving train and go into hiding.

In a remote log cabin they find the body of John Ball - the wanted brother - along with a map to a gold mine. In Wabinosh House Rod deposits the card and the Franco-Canadian Benoit, who works there as a double agent shall notify his boss Jules LaRocque. Together with some men he tries to steal the card, which he fails. Instead, he kidnaps Felice Newsome, who also lives in the Wabinosh house . Rod and Wabi free them from the gangster captivity. A little later, Marie LaFleur applied to the Wabinosh house as an accountant and was promptly accepted. She also works for LaRocque.

After their liberation, LaRocque finds out that the two strangers are involved in a murder case and takes advantage of this: One of his men disguises himself as Mountie and takes them both prisoner. In LaRocque's quarters, they encounter the real Mountie and free him too. He should actually arrest her, but when Rod offers him to look for his prisoners through the gold mine, Rod agrees. Here he finds out that Felice is the niece of his client.

While following the real map, the gangsters follow a fake, and another chase begins, in which the Mountie is shot and his life is in danger.

The gangsters decide to attack the Wabinosh house, and the grand finale takes place.

The film was shot on Mammoth Lakes and other locations in California . The film is also accompanied by two large music scores . One is a meditative mix, while the other sounds a bit wilder and more nerve-wracking and is used in fight scenes.

The film could be described as the Beery family reunion. Here father Noah Beery senior and his son Noah Beery junior appear in more important supporting roles, and the Oscar-winning uncle Wallace Beery can also be seen in a cameo .

The story of the film is based on the novella The Wolf Hunters by James Oliver Curwood . The film itself is a remake of The Wolf Hunters from 1926. Excerpts from the film were reused for the 2007 documentary 100 Years of John Wayne . The film was released on DVD by Flashpoint AG in 2007 under the title You Kill For Gold . The film was previously released in Germany under the title Greed for Gold .

In Germany, the film was shown under the title Greed for Gold as part of the ZDF Western series Western von Yesterday , which was broadcast from May 1978 to July 1986. The series consists of westerns of the 1930s and 1940s, in which the films were divided into episodes of 25 minutes each or cut accordingly.
