Leo A. "Lee" Zahler (born August 14, 1893 in New York City , † February 21, 1947 in Hollywood , Los Angeles , California ) was an American composer .
Life
Leo A. Zahler was born the eldest of three sons and a daughter of the Austro-Hungarian Jews Joseph and Annie Zahler, who immigrated to the United States in the 1890s . His father worked as a pattern designer for a tailor shop. Zahler's own career began in New York, where he worked as a professional pianist. By 1933 he worked for over a decade in the studio of producer Larry Darmour , where he composed music for the short films of the two comedians Mickey Rooney and Charlie Chase . He then moved to Columbia Pictures ' music studio , where he composed the music for films such as The Last of the Mohicans , Rodeo , You Kill for Gold and Batman and Robin .
In 1957, Zahler's widow Rose sued several production companies and studios, including Columbia Pictures, Unity TV and Station KTTV, for unlicensed use of Zahler's music in other productions for $ 364,000. In 1960 she was subsequently found to be right, and from then on she received royalties on the works of her deceased husband.
Lee Zahler was married to Rose Rosenberg and had a son, the composer, Gordon Zahler . As a teenager, he broke his neck while taking gymnastics classes at Pasadena Junior High School , suffering from quadriplegia , a form of paraplegia , and leading his family to financial ruin. After Zahler died in poverty on February 21, 1947, he was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glenadel.
