In the silent film era he was able to make a name for himself in numerous films with the portrayal of self-important authority figures; he had played this type of role on stage since the end of the 19th century. He worked with well-known directors such as Charlie Chaplin , Victor Sjöström , Cecil B. DeMille and John Ford .

In 1927 he was the hot-headed Colonel Blood, the opponent of Laurel and Hardy in their short film Leichtbeute , a year later he had one of his most famous roles as a businessman in ... but the meat is weak next to Gloria Swanson . With the onset of the sound film, his roles shrank visibly. He avoided mainly on B-Westerns, where he portrayed sheriffs, cattle barons or the father of the main character.
