action

John Brant has escaped prison after being innocently jailed for murder . Now he wants to look for the real murderer, Joseph Conlon, on his own. While on the run, he gets unexpected help from the robber Bob Jones. This gives him access to the gang of Ed Walsh, who have a hidden shelter in an abandoned mine in the mountains. Since Walsh does not trust the newcomer, Jones is supposed to rob a safe with Brant . However, Brant can warn of the robbery unnoticed, so that the sheriff sets an ambush . Brant is shot at the attempted break-in.

A month later, Brant has recovered and is in love with the beautiful Sally Blake. When he hears of a planned attack by the gang on the stagecoach , he anticipates the gang undetected and hides the money in a safe place. He then confides in Sally and tells her where the money is hidden and that he only joined the gang to find the real killer and to be able to prove his own innocence. Shortly afterwards, he learns from Jones that this is in truth the killer wanted. Undecided about the friendship that has developed between the two of them, Brant holds back, since he thinks Jones is basically a good-hearted person.

Walsh's distrust of Brant, however, remains unbroken, and Jones, too, is beginning to doubt the sincerity of his new partner - not least out of jealousy about Sally. Jones rides Brant into town, where both of them narrowly escape arrest by the sheriff . They can escape, but Jones sends Brant back to the mine, where an ambush awaits him. But when Sally informs him about Brant's intentions to want to save him, although he was innocent in jail because of him, Jones realizes his mistake and rushes to Brant's help. It comes to a showdown in which the gang is wiped out and Jones is seriously injured. Before he dies he admits the murder to the sheriff. Brant is exonerated by the confession .

criticism

"Before Wayne made his breakthrough in the lead role in Ford's groundbreaking" Ringo "in 1939, he played primarily in multi-part and B-movies in the 1930s . "Desperado Man" also falls into this period. "
