The Girl Problem (1919)

Corinne Griffith (born November 24, 1896 in Texarkana , Texas , † July 13, 1979 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress . She was one of the biggest stars of the silent movie era and known as The Orchid Lady .

Life

Corinne Griffith was educated in a New Orleans convent . She signed a studio contract with Vitagraph in 1916 and made several films that made her a well-known movie star. She moved to First National in 1923 , which she has since touted as The Orchid Lady or The Most Beautiful Girl in the World . Similar to Hedy Lamarr later , Corinne Griffith trusted her looks rather than her dramatic talent. Her films were mostly romantic melodramas and salon comedies. The actress lived secluded and without much effort in a rented property. In contrast to her ethereal screen image, Griffith negotiated each of her contracts personally and also monitored the facility for her high fees herself. By the middle of the decade she was considered the richest woman next to Mary Pickford .

Griffith appeared in several sound films , but her popularity quickly dwindled. First National paid the actress a $ 250,000 settlement in mid-1930 to prematurely end her contract with the studio. Griffith made another film in England and retired into private life in 1932, where she concentrated on writing. One of the many books she published was her biography Papa's Delicate Condition . The book was made into a film by George Marshall in 1962 . She also wrote the text of Hail to the Redskins , the official anthem of the Washington Redskins , to whose owner George Preston Marshall she was married from 1936 to 1958. She described the experiences around the team in another bestseller, My Life with the Redskins .

In the mid-1960s, Griffith's name reappeared in the headlines when she tried to have her short-term marriage with Broadway actor Danny Scholl, 25 years her junior, annulled in court. During the trial, she testified that she was actually the sister of the long-dead Corinne Griffith who was at least 20 years younger than her. Several colleagues from the silent film era, including Lois Wilson and Betty Blythe , were able to prove in the course of the hearing that the plaintiff would clearly be the real Corinne Griffith.

Corinne Griffith left a fortune of approximately $ 150 million on her death. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1560 Wine Street commemorates the actress.
