action

England in 1782. Emma Hart is the beautiful daughter of a cook who works for the actor George Romney. She is friends with Charles Greville. But later she married Charles' uncle, Lord William Hamilton , the British ambassador to the court of the Kingdom of Naples . Despite the age difference and different social backgrounds, the couple is happy. Emma even becomes a confidante of the Queen of Naples.

Years later, Emma meets the English captain Horatio Nelson . England is at war with France. Nelson, the commander of an English warship, is able to store important supplies and water through Emma in Naples. The two fall in love. Nelson's victories over the French fleet and Emma's influence at the court of Naples are closely watched in London. Finally the lovers are ordered to London, where they greet the crowd enthusiastically.

But the higher society rejects Emma. Her husband also evades her. When Emma is refused an invitation to a royal celebration in honor of the captain, Nelson leaves his wife Fanny and retires with Emma to his country estate. Both are happy there for a while, but Nelson is soon entrusted with a fleet assignment again. Again he wins victories over the French fleet. He is fatally injured in the Battle of Trafalgar . He dies surrounded by his crew, his last thoughts are with Emma.

criticism

Mordaunt Hall of the New York Times writes that Frank Lloyd has the crew, the money, and the ships. But some of his scenes are too abrupt, other scenes are ruined by the inevitable music.
