Montagu Love
Harry Montagu Love (born March 15, 1877 , according to other information 1880 or 1881, in Portsmouth , England , † May 17, 1943 in Beverly Hills , Los Angeles ) was a British theater and film actor .
Life
Montagu Love was born as Harry Montague Love in Portsmouth, England, but his exact year of birth is controversial. After finishing school, he first worked as an illustrator for a London newspaper, for which he illustrated the Second Boer War . After he had decided to become an actor and gained his first experience in London theaters, he traveled with an acting company to the United States , where he appeared regularly on New York's Broadway until 1934 , including alongside Barton MacLane in Norman Reilly Raines Hangman's Whip .
In 1914 he began his film career at World Studios in New Jersey . In the mid-1920s, he went to Hollywood , where he regularly appeared in unsympathetic roles. His villain roles included the appearance as an adversary of Rudolph Valentino in The Sheik's Son and as an opponent of John Barrymore in Don Juan - The Great Lover , one of the first films to come up with spoken dialogue thanks to the Vitaphone process. In George Fitzmaurice's The Night of Love from 1927 Montagu Love embodied Ronald Colman's rival for the love of Vilma Bánky . A year later, Love was directed by Victor Sjöström in the film drama The Wind , where he is killed as a cattle dealer after an alleged rape by Lillian Gish . In contrast to many other silent film actors, Love made the switch to sound film at the end of the 1920s without any problems.
In the 1930s, Love took on supporting roles in numerous genres, where he was often used as a figure of authority. He had appearances in film musicals such as One in a Million with Sonja Henie and Ein Fräulein in Nöten from 1937 with Fred Astaire . He has also appeared regularly in adventure films such as The Battle for India and Sidi Hakim Uprising . Love has been used several times in adventure films alongside Errol Flynn , for example as the corrupt bishop in Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds , as King Henry VIII of England in The Prince and the Begging Boy and as King Philip II of Spain in The Lord of the seven seas . Other historical figures who played Montagu Love were Thomas Jefferson in Alexander Hamilton and in The Life of Emile Zola the French politician Godefroy Cavaignac , one of the protagonists of the Dreyfus affair and opponent of Emile Zola .
Montagu Love was married to his first wife Gertrude from 1908 to 1928. His marriage to his second wife Marjorie Hollis lasted from 1929 until his death in 1943. He was active as an actor until the end. He was buried in the Chapel Of The Pines Crematory in Los Angeles.
