The Highwayman is a 1967 American western directed by Lesley Selander with Howard Keel in the lead role. The script is based on a story by Andrew Craddock.

action

The player and gunslinger Lee Travis is a southerner . He is captured during the civil war . He is given the opportunity to prove himself to be a man of honor by maintaining law and order in the city of Colton, Arizona . There he is supposed to replace the corrupt Sheriff Grover. Mayor Smith hopes Travis can put saloon owner Rile in his place.

Nobody suspects that Travis is a Southern agent who is supposed to bring guns and ammunition from a hiding place to a group of Confederate soldiers who are nearby. Because he tries to clean the city of drunks and bums who hang around Riles Saloon. In a game of dice, he wins the saloon. Travis closes the place and expels Rile from town. The barmaid Molly, who he mistakenly assumed to be his contact from the south, reveals to him that Rile sold weapons to the Apaches. Travis realizes that Rile must have found the hidden weapons. Trying to arrest him, Travis is injured and nursed to health by the hat maker Jill Wyler, the right contact person.

Deputy Dan Shelby finds out that Travis and Jill are Southern agents. When he wants to take the two to the mayor, Grover comes back to town. He can herald the end of the civil war . He also informs Smith that Rile wants to attack the city together with the Apaches . The citizens put up bitter resistance. Rile, his men, and most of the Apaches are killed. Wyler and Shelby fall in love. Travis hands Molly the saloon and leaves town.

Reviews

The lexicon of the international film about the film: "Western of average design, which offers hardly any tension."

The cinema magazine Cinema was also not enthusiastic about the film and described it as "a very sloppy routine work."

  • The film premiered in the United States in March 1968. In Germany it ran in cinemas from April 23, 1968.
  • In the US Version, James Cagney can be heard as the introductory narrator.
  • It was the last film for director Lesley Selander, who has directed over 140 films in his career. For main actor Howard Keel (as well as for Barton MacLane and Brian Donlevy) it was the penultimate role in a movie, after which he switched to the medium of television.
  • The original title is Arizona Bushwhackers . Bushwhackers were illegal guerrillas who fought for the Confederation in the border areas between North and South during the Civil War.
