Yvonne De Carlo 1979

Yvonne De Carlo (born September 1, 1922 as Margaret Yvonne Middleton in Vancouver , † January 8, 2007 in Los Angeles ) was a Canadian -born American actress and singer. Her best-known roles were Sephora, Moses' wife, in the monumental film The Ten Commandments (1956) and Lily Munster in the television series The Munsters (1964–1966).

Life

De Carlos' father, William Middleton, was a New Zealander whose ancestors came from England. Her mother had French-Sicilian ancestry. With the support of her mother, she learned to dance at a young age, sang in a choir and studied acting. When she was fifteen (1937) she first visited Hollywood in search of a role, but to no avail. In 1940 she tried again and landed a small role in the short musical I look at You and the film Harvard Here I Come . Other small roles followed, in which she was often not even mentioned in the credits. During the war years, actresses with an exotic and therefore “un-American” appearance were not in great demand. Therefore, De Carlo also worked in clubs or as a singer.

She had her breakthrough in 1945 as a dancing spy in the western Salome Where She Danced . Though panned by criticism, the film was quite successful at the box office, giving De Carlo some notoriety and better roles. In 1947 she played alongside Burt Lancaster in cell R 17 and again in 1949 in Daring Alibi . Director Cecil B. DeMille finally engaged her in 1956 for her greatest film. She took on the role of Sephora, the wife of Moses (played by Charlton Heston ), in The Ten Commandments . De Carlo has worked with greats such as Alec Guinness (in The Key to Paradise, 1953), Clark Gable and Sidney Poitier (in Weep for the Damned, 1957), John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara (in MacLintock , 1963), George Montgomery (in Texas Desperados , 1967), George Hamilton (in The Six Suspects, 1968) and Rod Steiger (in Dark Paradise, 1987). She had guest appearances on television series such as Bonanza and The People of Shiloh Ranch .

She gained new popularity as Lily Munster in the television series The Munsters (1964–1966) and the subsequent films from 1966 and 1981. She had accepted this role because her husband was critically injured while filming That Was the Wild West and hospital expenses had put her in debt.

In 1971 she sang in the musical Follies on Broadway, for which she received high praise.

She had her last major role in 1991 as Aunt Rosa in the remake of Oscar - From Rain to the Eaves by and with Sylvester Stallone .

Yvonne De Carlo received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame , one for her cinematic achievement (6124 Hollywood Blvd.) and one for her television work (6715 Hollywood Blvd.).

The actress was married from 1955 to 1968 to the stuntman Robert Morgan. From this divorced marriage there were two sons, Bob and Michael Morgan. Michael died in 1997.

Yvonne De Carlo died at the age of 84 in the Motion Picture & Television retirement home ( Los Angeles ), where she had moved in 1998 after a stroke.
