action

Amantha Starr is the privileged daughter of a Kentucky plantation owner. After his death, a shocking secret comes to light: Her mother was a black slave to her father. Since she is now legally owned and not a survivor of her deceased father, she is given up for sale by a New Orleans slave dealer.

On the boat trip to New Orleans, she is harassed by her owner, the slave trader Calloway. Then she decides to put an end to her life. Calloway can prevent this at the last moment and now leaves her alone, because such a beautiful, cultured, young woman who passes for a white woman seems far too valuable to him to risk her death.

Amantha will be auctioned. When she is unabashedly inspected by a potential buyer in the auction hall, she is saved by the wealthy plantation owner Hamish Bond by offering an extraordinarily large sum for her. He is awarded the contract. Amantha, expecting the worst, is surprised that her new owner treats her like a lady, not a slave. In his city villa she meets his housekeeper and former lover Michele. Hamish has a very special relationship with his main slave and plantation manager, Rau-Ru. Rau-Ru is grateful for the kindness, education, and trust Hamish places in him; but he still hates him.

Amantha and Hamish fall in love. He is ready to give her freedom, but she chooses to stay with him. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that Hamish is hiding a terrible secret from his past that plagues his conscience.

Then the Civil War breaks out and New Orleans is captured by the Northern Army. Hamish becomes a wanted man when he and other plantation owners set fire to his fields in protest to destroy the harvest. Rau-Ru, who has meanwhile joined the Northern Regiment, helps Hamish and Amantha to escape.

useful information

Warner bought the rights to the book before it was published in 1955.

There is actually a plantation called "Belle Helene", as it is mentioned in the film. The Ashland Plantation, where the film was shot, was named under its previous owner. The property is located in the state of Louisiana between Geismar and Darrow . The associated mansion is also shown on the movie poster.

The film was shown in German cinemas under the title Hamish, the slave trader and in Austria also as Amanta, the white slave . When it was first shown in Germany in the run-up to Christmas in 1957, the film was released for people aged 16 and over. The minimum age was later reduced to 12 years.

criticism

"Long film adaptation of the novel in the style of the hit movie ' Gone with the Wind ', but only as an elaborate studio production filled with melodrama and chants."
