action

During the final months of the American Civil War, Confederate John Warner deserted when he received news of the birth of his girlfriend Rosa. He is captured, but together with two other soldiers, Lucky Boy and Jim, he manages to escape again and they reach the home village of the young woman, which was, however, ravaged by a cholera epidemic. Rosa's father, Don Pedro Sandoval, who had already forbidden the "Gringo" to marry his daughter, chases him away with his newborn son and two friends without any further assistance - he doesn't even give them water. The small group, reinforced by the ex-monk Converso, goes in search of urgently needed water and food, but is turned away. Milk is even poured out before it should fall into the hands of the outcasts. Eventually the child dies of malnutrition and thirst.

Warner rallies a group of outlaws and takes revenge on those who offered him no help. The farmer is drowned in milk; Sandoval's eldest son shot and laid his father on the stairs. When Sandoval pursues the gang that fled to Mexico, Warner puts him in a knife duel in a bullring. In a duel they both fall into an enclosure and Sandoval is killed by a bull. A group of Mexican soldiers finally occupied the arena and executed everyone.

criticism

"Very entertaining, but incredibly dark western."

- Ulrich P. Bruckner: For a few more corpses, Munich 2006, p. 634.

“A bloodthirsty, almost operatically arranged and staged spaghetti western, which comes along with such hollow pathos that it involuntarily seems comical. Good actors and the allusions to social backgrounds cannot hide the weaknesses. "

"By renouncing unnecessary cruelty and by having a solid, well-motivated story, the flick stands out from the crowd of spaghetti westerns without losing any of its tension."
