Pi's Lullaby is a song from the film Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger by director Ang Lee . The song was composed by Mychael Danna and written and sung by Bombay Jayashri . It serves as the film's opening song and, as the title suggests, belongs to the lullaby genre. The film was for the Academy Awards 2013 as Best Song nomination, but lost to Skyfall from the eponymous James Bond film . It was the first Oscar nomination for a Tamil song and the only one for an Indian in 2013.

History of origin

Much of the film music was recorded on the grounds of the 21st Century Fox , but composer Mychael Danna also traveled to India to collect original material for the soundtrack. The song, which was to serve as the theme song, was composed by him in 2011 in India. He worked closely with singer Bombay Jashari, who wrote the text. Ang Lee had a clear idea of how the song should work. The song should not make you sleepy, but rather convey a comfortable feeling of security. When Pi's Lullaby was in fact the first recordings for the soundtrack. The complete score took about a year of work. In 2013, Danna received a Golden Globe Award for the entire soundtrack .

The song was used both as the opening melody and in the credits.

controversy

After the nomination was announced, voices were raised that the play could be plagiarism . A foundation named after the carnatic musician Irayimman Thampi , who died in 1856 , claimed that the first eight lines were a verbatim adaptation of the originally Malabar piece Omanathinkal Kidavo . Jayashri dismissed these allegations widely, saying that she merely wrote down what came on her mind.
