action

Chris Mattson is married to Lisa, an African American . The couple move into a house in Los Angeles , California . Your new neighbor is the widowed cop Abel Turner, who is black himself . However, the relationship between White Chris and Black Lisa bothers him and their liberal attitude. When he catches his daughter and son watching the new neighbors having sex in their pool, he advises the couple to leave the area because, in his opinion, they do not fit there. However, they reject this idea in principle, which is why Turner bullies the two with new methods. He refuses to turn off the outside lights that shine in the couple's bedroom and manipulates the air conditioning in the neighbors' property because Chris keeps throwing his cigarette butts on the street and property.

After breaking into the Mattsons' garage, the argument comes to a head as Chris Mattson is at the end of his patience. As a result of such incidents, Lisa's father tries to persuade the Mattsons to move away, but this leads to an argument about the Mattsons' relationship. This begins to crumble more and more when Lisa realizes that she is pregnant, but Chris feels left out because of the pill that he has taken off without his knowledge . Meanwhile, the area is threatened by a forest fire that is moving ever closer to the neighborhood. Now Chris Mattson tries to hit his neighbor with his own means, directs spotlights on Turner's house and has a hedge planted.

At the same time, Turner is being given an indefinite leave of absence for teaching a lesson to a fugitive using inappropriate violence. The same evening he throws a bachelorette party at his house for a colleague that lasts late into the night. Chris Mattson tries to calm down and is held by two of the drunken police officers and danced to by a stripper . The next morning Lisa Mattson found a DVD in the mail with the video from the previous evening, in which her husband can be seen with the stripper.

However, because Lisa does not pay any further attention to the provocation of her neighbor, Turner takes another remedy. He hires a dealer to spy on the police to ravage the Mattsons' home while they are at a housewarming party in the neighborhood. Lisa, who returns earlier, surprises the burglar and is knocked down by him. Before that, however, she triggers the alarm system that Turner and Chris hear.

They run to the house. At the door, Turner instructs his neighbor Chris to wait outside and enters the house with his gun drawn. While the hired burglar is fleeing onto the terrace, Turner catches him and shoots him out of hand. However, he does not get around to taking the intruder's cell phone, which would betray him due to the phone calls made. While Chris visits his wife in the hospital, Turner enters the house again, but is disturbed by the returning Mattsons and has to abandon his search. Meanwhile, the forest fire has come dangerously close to the houses, so much so that they have to be evacuated. Chris Mattson finds the burglar's cell phone while packing her fire-threatened belongings. He redialed the number and heard Turner answer. When he looks out the window, Turner spots him, draws a pistol and runs towards the house.

Turner enters the Mattsons' home, where he is temporarily overpowered by Chris so Lisa can use her cell phone to escape to the car. Turner breaks free and shoots the fugitive woman's car. In shock, she rams a parked car and is trapped in her own car. Chris runs to the car with Turner's gun, but cannot free his wife. Turner draws another pistol and shoots Chris, who is hiding behind the car. When the police, alerted by the gunshots, arrive, Turner hides his gun and presents himself as a victim. Chris does not want to drop the gun despite the police and his wife's requests because he knows that Turner would then shoot to target him kill and commit suicide by cop yourself . In a battle of words, he provokes Turner. He finally pulls his gun, shoots Chris in the shoulder and is then shot by the police.

Lisa is released and the injured Chris is taken to an ambulance. He tells Lisa that he loves her and that they will soon be a family.

criticism

Dennis Harvey wrote in Variety magazine on Sept. 7, 2008 that the film offered "real tension" and "engrossing drama" before "succumbing" to the conventions of a thriller. The portrayal of Samuel L. Jackson could "magnetize" the critics and the audience. The "excellent" Kerry Washington fills an imprecisely sketched character with life, the portrayal of Patrick Wilson is merely "solid". The end of the film is disappointing.

The editorial team of Cinema judged: “LaBute stages a relentless character drama about the depths of the human soul and thus dismantles the clichéd idyll of the American suburbs - only the last ten minutes tarnish the positive overall picture. Conclusion: Acting brilliant performances and a coherent atmosphere make the film a high-class racism drama. "

The lexicon of international films is of the opinion that the film is a “psychological thriller about racism and anger, whose antagonist, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is multilayered, which makes the deficits in the drawing of the two main characters all the more evident. Initially staged in a captivating way, the film loses a lot of its persuasiveness in the final part due to the banal resolution. "
