action
Little boy Sanjay is watching his favorite cartoon show on television when his father begins a prayer at his Hindu shrine. Both are annoyed with the other. So Sanjay tries to turn up the TV until his father turns off the TV and takes the son to the prayer shrine. While his father continues to pray, Sanjay tries to get his superhero action figure. But he accidentally lights the cloak on the prayer candle and can just extinguish it. The oil candle goes out. Sanjay is drawn into the shrine. Suddenly Ravana appears and wants to destroy the statues of Vishnu , Durga and Hanuman . But Sanjay manages to restart the oil lamp and the three gods come to life. But Ravana is too strong. Finally, however, Sanjay manages to use the prayer candle as a bell with his toy. That is enough to drive away Ravana. Vishnu thanks Sanjay with a new toy.
Back in the real world, Sanjay notices that his superhero character is unharmed. His father hands him the remote control, but instead of watching TV, the two of them watch Sanjay's new comic, in which the three gods protect the superheroes.
background
Director and screenwriter Sanjay Patel was inspired by his own childhood for the short film. As an Indian immigrant in San Bernardino , he found himself between two worlds: traditional Hinduism, which his parents adhered to, and Western influences. In particular, the Transformers , Superman and the Looney Tunes had done it to him. Not always what his parents wanted him to do. Nevertheless, he prayed and meditated the puja daily with his father. From this arose the story that unites both worlds into one. At first very unsure whether he really wanted to wrap a personal story about the relationship between his father and himself in film form, he was encouraged to do so by Pixar boss John Lasseter . It is Patel's first short film.
Sanjay's Super Team premiered on June 15, 2015 at the Festival d'Animation Annecy and was shown in US cinemas from November 25, 2015 as a supporting film for Arlo & Spot .
reception
While the main film Arlo & Spot received only good reviews, many critics and viewers were euphoric about Sanjay's Super Team . The short film was nominated for both an Oscar and an Annie Award .
