Day & Night is a animation - short film from 2010 directed by Teddy Newton for Pixar Animation Studios and the Walt Disney Company . The film was shown as a supporting film for Toy Story 3 .

action

Day is a cartoon character with scenes played out in daylight on the surface of his body. When Day changes his position, the projection on his body also changes. Night is the same figure, on whose body surface scenes of the night play out. Both figures also show their emotions through the scenes, which they use to underline their indicated actions. The characters themselves do not speak, but rather practice pantomime, which is reinforced by the music and noises of the projections.

Day encounters the sleeping night during a walk. For abstraction, Day projects a sun and Night a moon, including little sheep jumping over a fence. After Night was woken up by Day, both were amazed at each other. Whatever one projects onto himself, the other shows as a contrasting scene. For example, Day shows a woman sunbathing on the beach, while Night shows the same scene at night, without a woman, but with some garbage left behind.

Both build up aggression and there is an exchange of blows in which there is no winner. When they realize this, they begin to show each other their best scenes, which creates great enthusiasm in each other. In a radio broadcast of the projection, you can hear the film's subtle message: "I reject anything new because it scares me".

Both embrace when it comes to sunrise at night and sunset at day. The half suns of both figures meet and appear united for a moment. Then night changes to day and day to night. Both are happy and begin to project each other's best scenes onto themselves.

background

  • The radio voice originally spoken by Wayne Dyer is spoken in the German version by Claus Brockmeyer .
  • In contrast to previous Pixar short films, Day & Night is a combination of 2D and 3D film elements. The cartoon characters are in 2D, but the scenes projected into the characters are animated in 3D. According to production designer Don Shank, it is different from anything Pixar has ever done.
  • The film ran along with the premiere of Toy Story 3 for the first time on June 18, 2010 in theaters in the United States and Canada.

Awards

Day & Night was nominated for the 2011 Academy Awards in the Best Animated Short Film category.
