Knickknack ( engl. For trinkets , frills ) is a nearly four-minute, animated short film , the 1989 by Pixar was produced. It was Pixar's first production in 3D . The plot is accompanied by a scat piece composed and interpreted by jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin .

action

Some souvenirs from sunny holiday countries are on a shelf and move slightly to the sound of the Caribbean-style background music. A little off the beaten track is a snow globe from cold Nome, Alaska . The lonely snowman in the ball becomes aware of the partying when a souvenir from ' Sunny Miami ', an attractive woman in a bikini, waves him over to her. However, he has to find out that he is trapped in the snow globe. He now makes various attempts to break out of the ball: the igloo fails as a battering ram , his carrot nose bends when he uses it as a chisel . Using a jackhammer doesn't get him any closer to his goal, but it does ensure that the bits of coal that make up his facial features fall down. An ignited cutting torch only whirls him through his prison several times. The last explosive charge used does not damage the glass, but moves the snow globe dangerously close to the edge of the shelf. When the snowman leans forward to look down, the ball crashes. In free fall, he notices an emergency exit in the floor of the sphere and escapes his dungeon through it, only to land in a fishbowl . Frustrated for a short time by the situation, he sees a holiday souvenir from ' Sunny Atlantis ', a mermaid very similar to the lady from Miami. But before he can get to her, the snow globe sinks to the bottom of the glass and takes him prisoner again.

particularities

After the technically complex Tin Toy , director John Lasseter wanted to make a cartoon-like film in the style of Chuck Jones or Tex Avery . Therefore, Knick Knack appears rather simply animated by the simple geometric shapes and smooth surfaces.

There are two versions of Knick Knack , both released in 2D and 3D respectively. The original version was first shown in 3D at SIGGRAPH 1988, as well as in 2D on the Tiny Toy Stories VHS cassette. As a supporting film for Finding Nemo , a digitally revised version was released in 2003, in which the breasts of the main female characters were significantly reduced and the mermaid wore a bikini top made of shells instead of the original starfish pasties . John Lasseter justified this with his responsibility as a father. A 3D version of the new version can be found on the Disney digital 3D release of The Nightmare Before Christmas from 2006.

Awards and criticism

Award for Best Short Film at the Seattle International Film Festival 1990 . In 2001 Terry Gilliam voted Knick Knack one of the ten best animated films of all time.
