Sanjay Patel (* 1974 in London ) is a British - American animator , illustrator and film director .

Life

Patel was born in London, but moved with his Gujarat family as a child to San Bernardino , California, where the family ran a motel. After finishing high school , Patel studied animation at the Cleveland Institute of the Arts and then at the California Institute of the Arts , but dropped out both times: After two years at CalArts, he was hired by Pixar as an animator in the mid-1990s . At Pixar, he was involved as an animator in the films Das große Krabbeln (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), Die Monster AG (2001) and Ratatouille (2007).

Patel started working on the short animation film Sanjay's Super Team from 2012 , with which he made his debut as a director. It is the first Pixar film to put a person of color at the center of the plot, with the film being autobiographical. Sanjay's Super Team was released in 2015 and screened in theaters as a supporting film for Arlo & Spot . Patel was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film in 2016 for Sanjay's Super Team together with producer Nicole Grindle .

Patel is the owner of the Ghee Happy brand , through which he has published various books on Indian mythology, among other things. He lives and works in Los Angeles .
